Have you tried a few things with ChatGPT, but somehow you're never 100% satisfied and waste a lot of time on the briefing every time? Then CustomGPTs are exactly what you need! CustomGPTs are customized versions of ChatGPT that understand you, your business, your brand voice, and your target audience. In this guide, I'll show you step by step how to create your first CustomGPT - even without any prior technical knowledge.

What is a CustomGPT anyway?

A CustomGPT is a personalized version of ChatGPT. Instead of having to explain who you are, what your business does, and how you communicate every time, your CustomGPT already knows all of this. It's like a trained mini-intern who knows your style and can handle tasks independently: From social media copy and newsletter drafts to business coaching and financial consulting.

Advantages:

  • Saves you a lot of time when prompting & writing letters

  • Works in your language, for your target audience

  • Ideal for recurring tasks (e.g. content recycling)

Excursus: External GPTs

ChatGPT has a section with external GPTs, such as those from Canva. These are custom GPTs created by other companies or creators, which - just like your own - already contain certain background information and instructions. This allows you to work with them directly for their intended purpose without having to do a lot of additional briefing. Personally, I only use external GPTs to create prompts for Midjourney. Otherwise, I primarily use my own custom GPTs in my business.

Creating a Custom GPT: What You Need to Get Started

  • ChatGPT Pro ($20/month, required for the Custom GPT feature)

  • A clear idea of what you want to use your CustomGPT for (use case)

  • Optional: your own texts (e.g. blog articles, newsletters) to train your style

Step-by-step: How to create your first CustomGPT

1) Define idea & goal for the custom GPT

Ask yourself: What task could a GPT take over for me?

Example use cases:

"My CustomGPT should create LinkedIn posts from blog articles that match my target audience."

"I need a marketing consultant for my next online course launch."

"I would like my newsletter to be written by CustomGPT every week in the same style on a different topic."

2) Prepare the prompt

The prompt is the heart of your GPT. Here you explain:

  • Who you are

  • Who you work for

  • What he should do and in what order

  • How you speak (tone of voice)

  • What examples they can look at (e.g. 2 of your LinkedIn posts if the task is to create LinkedIn posts)

Treat your CustomGPT like an AI intern: the more information you provide, the more precise the context, the better the result.

Extra tip: Have ChatGPT analyze your tone/brand voice by uploading a few texts and asking it to "analyze my brand voice." You can then use the results in CustomGPT within your prompt.

3) Create custom GPT

  1. In ChatGPT, go to "Explore GPTs" > "Create GPT"

  2. Give your GPT a name (e.g. "Bertha" for blog articles)

  3. Enter description and purpose

  4. Insert your prepared prompt

  5. If necessary, enable internet search (e.g. if you want ChatGPT to access your blog URLs directly)

  6. Click "Create" and your CustomGPT is ready!

  7. Decide whether the GPT should be available only to you, to everyone, or only to the people who have the link (e.g. team members).

4) Test run & fine-tuning

Test your GPT directly with a real example:

  • Insert blog article URL or text

  • Check: Is the language right? Does it hit the right tone? Do you like the result?

  • Promptly sharpen if necessary (more examples, more specific task)

Frequently asked questions about custom GPT creation

Do I need programming skills to create a CustomGPT?

No! You don't need any technical knowledge. Creating a CustomGPT is as easy as filling out a form. Just follow the instructions above.

Does this also work if I don't have any content like blog articles or newsletters yet?

Yes, you can also start with topic ideas or short examples. The important thing is that you explain to your GPT how you communicate and for whom. However, you don't have to use GPTs for content creation. There are many, many more use cases for custom GPTs that have nothing to do with text.

Can I edit or extend my CustomGPT later?

Absolutely. You can customize your prompt at any time, add new examples, or expand the use case. Your GPT grows with your business.
